Vincent Nicolas

My art revolves around film photography. Accepting the media's imperfections and strengths no matter the subject (street photography, portrait, architecture, night photography...).

My curiosity has me constantly looking at the world for stimulation. Noticing all that surrounds me, I look for inspiration through music, urban life, people and friends. Colors is a powerful means to express a feeling; colors contribute to the strength of my ideas and creations. My black and white work is anchored in composition, structure and dynamism.

Film photography is an obvious medium for me: I come from a more academic background, steeped in painting and drawing. The hands-on required to process and develop film drew me in: it requires the patience and precision that I enjoyed so much in my formal years as a painter.

The romantic aspect of film photography also attracted me:: the ephemerality of an action or moment. I use older models of cameras which lack automatic settings. It requires more discipline and attention: a missed opportunity and the moment is gone.

Combining my love for colors, composition and processing is how my creation becomes a work of art.

I hope you enjoy it.
